Banned Books & Local Sources
Designed for a Banned Books event in East Lansing, this poster promotes access to literature and highlights the importance of free expression within the community. The central message, “Read for Your Rights EL,” is a bold call to action aligned with the event’s mission.
This was a combined event that worked in collaboration with Local Sources, an exhibition featuring zines, prints, and books by Michigan creators. The exhibit highlighted work that demonstrates the resilience found in non-traditional publishing and independent print culture.
The visual direction explores transparency and opacity to create a glitch-like effect that informed the color palette, reflecting the idea of banned books as disappearing or fragmented. This concept is reinforced through layered imagery and fragments of banned book covers, emphasizing loss, memory, and visibility. The design uses bold typography and composition to create impact while remaining accessible and engaging.
